Abstract Automobile-related environmental laws and regulations are being made more severe year by year for the purpose of preventing global warming. While the development of technology to increase effi ciency and reduce CO2 emissions has been pursued by automakers, the effi ciency of thrust needle roller bearings, more than 10 of which are generally used in one automatic transmission unit, must also be improved. JTEKT, focusing on friction drag between the cage and roller, has developed a low-friction-torque thrust needle roller bearing based on the results of torque factor analysis. Approximately 60% reduction of friction torque has been realized.
