Abstract In this research it has been shown that the sources of electromagnetic noise in electric power steering (EPS) systems can be identifi ed by measuring the distribution of magnetic fi eld strength on the substrate of the electronic control unit (ECU). As the first step in the electromagnetic noise source identification process, the distribution of magnetic fi eld strength on the ECU substrate was mapped by means of substrate noise visualization apparatus. Subsequently, the measured strength pattern was overlaid on the map so as to estimate the sources of electromagnetic noise, whereupon corrective measures were provided. It was confi rmed that the overall noise radiation from the system was reduced. As the establishment of technology for identifi cation of electromagnetic noise sources would do away with trial-and-error processes to counter electromagnetic noise, it is expected that such technology will help to improve effi ciency in ECU development.
