Abstract Recently, requirements for parts with improved accuracy and higher added value have intensified. Likewise, demands for machining systems characterized by high productivity, high accuracy, quick changeover capability and energy efficiency have increased. The mass-production of shaft-shaped parts requires numerous processes, including turning, heat treatment and grinding. Conventionally, the integration of these processes has been considered too diffi cult. However, as a result of a project carried out under NEDO*, JTEKT has succeeded in the development of necessary element technologies and a multi-tasking machine integrating the turning, heat treatment and grinding processes, effectively raising the mass-production productivity of shaft-shaped parts. This report presents the element and multi-tasking technologies of this machine.
