Establishment of Recycling Society

Preservation of the world's resource bases is a major theme of ISO26000, GRI Standards 2016, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There is also a strong demand on companies to reduce their usage of raw materials and to utilize recycled parts. In addition, due to the concern of global water shortages in the future, it is becoming increasingly important for companies to engage in activities for the effective utilization of water resources. At JTEKT, through promotion of production technology innovations, reduction of production processes and subsequent reduction of materials, and improvements and ingenuity at the production site, we are proceeding with various initiatives to reduce waste and reuse and recycle resources including water.

Activity Report
Waste Reduction <Production>

Initiatives for waste generated in large quantities

JTEKT is working to reduce the weight of waste generated (sludge, waste liquid), while reducing the generation of waste itself by making it into valuable materials (abrasive powder, waste plastics) and extending its service life (waste casting sand, waste liquid).

Toward higher material recycling rates

At JTEKT, iron, aluminum, and other metals from the by-products generated during production are recovered as valuable materials for material recycling.
On the other hand, thermal recovery of plastics has been promoted by the heat generated during incineration, or by generating electricity from that heat. In order to further reduce environmental impacts and make effective use of resources, JTEKT also promoted material recycling for plastics in FY2024, with the goal of increasing the material recycling rate of plastics to 35% by 2025.

Extension of cleaning solution life with microbubble generator

In the parts cleaning process at the Hanazono Plant, cleaning solutions are used to remove fine dust generated in the previous process. The cleaning solution had to be replaced with a new one once a week. However, by using a microbubble generator, the life of the cleaning solution has been extended to about two months by floating and removing the micro dust generated in the solution.By reducing the amount of cleaning fluid that is no longer needed, we have been able to reduce the amount of waste and also the amount of water used to dilute the cleaning material.

Reduction of packaging materials

In order to promote reduction of wooden packaging materials, we expanded the change from wooden pallets to resin pallets, and from wooden boxes to reinforced cardboard boxes.
Also, In order to promote reduction of paper packaging material, we expanded the use of returnable packaging materials for export and expanded the change from disposable carboard boxes to returnable polyethylene cases. We expanded our initiatives to reduce the amount of cushioning material used by reviewing excessive packaging and changing to corrugated boxes that fit the product size.
As a target for FY2024, JTEKT strives to achieve the packaging material basic unit (wood and paper): 0.715t/100 million yen.

Reduction of one-way plastic packaging materials

JTEKT implemented the reduction of disposable plastic packaging materials by switching to leather-wrapped vacuum packaging for large bearings and by expanding the use of belt lashings.
We will promote plastic packaging materials basic unit: 0.085t/100 million yen as our target for FY2024.

Effective utilization of resources <Reduction of water consumption>

Promoting the effective utilization of water

JTEKT is working to reduce water consumption, an important resource, by reducing waste and recycling water within the company. In FY2023, we further promoted reductions in usage, mainly through leakage prevention measures, with the goal of improving usage by at least 5.0% compared with FY2018.

Water risk assessment

In addition to effectively using water resources by improving the water consumption base unit, JTEKT has been assessing water risks at each business site using Aqueduct* since 2017.
JTEKT will continue to work to reduce water consumption and effectively use water resources through activities based on water risk assessment results including future predictions and water consumption and water dependency at each business site.

※Aqueduct
A database operated by the World Resources Institute (WRI) that provides world maps and information showing water risks such as physical water stress, water quality, regulatory risk concerning water resources, and reputational risk.

* Target companies for data collection : Global environmental management companies (JTEKT JAPAN 13 sites, 17 domestic group companies, 31 overseas group companies)

Water risk countermeasures

Water risk is assessed every fiscal year, using the WRI Aqueduct, with the sites rated "high" risk for water stress factors that directly impact our operations being considered water stressed areas. We also consider floods, droughts, regulatory and reputational factors, and the water stress factors as of 2030 for future water risks.
As a result of the water risk assessment in FY2023, India and Mexico were the regions rated as having high water stress among all the JTEKT Group's production sites.
Based on this assessment, we investigated the actual water consumption in each region and the local water situation, and we found that the water quality in the India region was poor, so we installed reverse osmosis (RO) equipment to improve the water quality before supplying it to the production process.

Water stress situation

Please refer to the graph below for changes in water usage in water stressed regions.
Water usage in stressed regions in FY2023 were 150Km3 in India and 15Km3 in Mexico. Special targets for water consumption have been set for each region in question, and measures such as water recycling and coolant reclamation are being promoted.

Reducing Water Usage with Smart Landscaping

At the JAMX plant where we work, we created smart landscaping using various technologies to improve sustainability and water quality. The following three principles are the basis for creating Smart Landscaping.
1.Use of alternative landscaping materials for green spaces (artificial turf)
2.Recovery, treatment and reuse of sewage water for irrigation as needed
3.Rainwater storage for other outdoor uses such as washing and irrigation
JAMX has expanded its plant and increased production, and the number of employees has increased accordingly. However, with smart landscaping, water consumption per employee was reduced from 6.01m3 to 5.08m3 in six months.

Commitment written by the employee

"Contributing to Local Water Supply Problems"

JAMX is located in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, a state with water supply problems. Addressing water supply issues has become one of our priorities, and we are constantly working to improve the activities that we undertake together in the region, and the production processes.
In celebration of World Water Day on March 22, JAMX is inviting employees to write about their commitments to caring for water. We are sharing excellent initiatives that we are implementing at home, such as turning off the faucet while washing our hands and body with soap, reusing wastewater from washing machines for irrigation and cleaning activities, etc. This is implemented to raise awareness of the importance of taking care of resources in the community. We will continue to support sustainability and constantly strive for improvement.
