The impact on environment by using product is deeply related to product development and design. Companies have a responsibility to develop technologies to reduce their environmental impact and to design products that are easy to reuse and recycle, considering the entire products' life cycle from material procurement to the use and disposal by customers.
JTEKT believes that our products and technologies directly and indirectly provide environmental countermeasures for our customers' products and manufacturing processes and, as such, greatly contribute to the environment. Therefore, we endeavor to improve the environmental performance of each product through the product lifecycle, and are contributing to the prevention of global warming and the effective use of resources as we strive to achieve a sustainable society.

Promotion by Environmental Responsive Products Subcommittee

The Environmental Responsive Products Subcommittee promotes development of environmentally-friendly products together with the domestic group companies. Innovative technology is incorporated in the development and design stages to make products smaller, lighter, and more efficient, as well as reduce the usage amount of environmentally hazardous substances and raw materials. In this way,JTEKT is engaging in environmental conservation on a global scale through its products.

In FY2023, we improved the efficiency of our products through further efforts to reduce weight and energy savings, resulting in a contribution to CO₂ reduction by our products to 575kt. Although we have exceeded our FY2025 target as of FY2021, we are continuing our initiatives to further reduce CO2 emissions.

Assessment method

In order to make the environmental load reduction effect of our products evaluated numerically, we have established its basic formula for environmental efficiency as our own index. The higher the value, the greater the environmental impact reduction. Therefore, we set the target of a higher environmental efficiency value each year, and work on product development while evaluating the degree of achievement.

  • Basic formula for environmental efficiency and environmental efficiency computation
    Environmental efficiency is a value calculated based on the degree of lightness, compactness, energy-savings, etc. The environmental efficiency value is calculated by dividing the environmental efficiency of the assessed product by that of the standard product.
  • Computation of environmental load reduction effects
    Environmental load reduction effect is determined by calculating the environmental load reduction rate from the environmental efficiency value. For example, if the environmental efficiency value is 1.25, the environmental load reduction effect of the product is 20%, and the reduced environmental load is calculated as the reciprocal of the envirnmental efficiency value.

JTEKT is promoting environmental design activities through the concerted efforts of each business division and group company. With such ingenuity from the design stage, the JTEKT Group's products contribute to the global environment.

JTEKT ELECTRONICS CORPORATION

"Reduction in power consumption from existing products by developing CM5-RHMI"

Our company sells the EA9 series of display units for the North American market. Five years have passed since the launch of this display series, and it was necessary to develop a successor model to meet growing user needs for higher functionality and easier use of IoT functions.
Besides, we have confirmed cases where this product is used as a main unit for connecting to an external large monitor via HDMI because the functions are insufficient for products with a screen integrated to 15 inches or less.
Based on these examples, the newly developed successor model will need to install additional external devices to match the increased software functionality. However, installing additional external equipment requires a dedicated power supply, which may increase power consumption.
By integrating and consolidating these external devices, the CM5-RHMI, a successor model, was able to reduce power consumption to 0.16 W, even taking into account the increased power consumption due to functional improvements, resulting in a 66% reduction in power consumption. (Conventional model consumes 0.46 W)

<Effects of Initiatives>

Conventional products required a USB expansion HUB and GateWay device as external peripheral devices, but the environmentally friendly product eliminates the need for a dedicated external power supply by incorporating these two functions within the product. The use of environmentally friendly components has reduced power consumption by 0.3W compared with conventional products and eliminated the need to install peripheral equipment, resulting in energy and cost savings.

Environmentally friendly product has achieved a 66% reduction in power consumption by reducing external peripherals.

Going forward, we will continue to develop energy- and resource-efficient products to reduce environmental impacts.
