要旨 Minimal quantity lubrication (MQL) machining has been recognized as a representative and successful environmentally friendly cutting operation. Specific synthetic polyol esters are optimal cutting fluids for MQL machining because of their high biodegradability, excellent oxidation stability and satisfactory cutting performance and can effectively lubricate cutting zone vicinities in very small quantities. The cutting performance of these esters is closely connected with tribological behavior based on the adsorbing characteristics of the ester and atmospheric gases onto nascent clean metal surfaces. In particular, the presence of oxygen is preferable in the case of machining steel, whereas oxygen causes unfavorable cutting situations in the case of machining aluminum.
