Basic concept of JTEKT
To create a safe and comfortable work environment
"All accidents can be prevented" is the company-wide safety and health philosophy in JTEKT, and all employees are united in their efforts to participate in safety and health activities and create a comfortable work environment, and under the global message "All for One in Life," which expresses our health and safety philosophy, we aim to achieve zero accidents through activities focusing on one's life and health.
Safety and Health Promotion Structure
In order to create a healthy, safe, secure, and comfortable work environment for all employees, we have established a company-wide Safety and Health Committee chaired by the President and consisting of members of the Safety and Health Affairs Secretariat of each plant and office, including management, to establish a centralized management system for safety and health, including domestic and overseas group companies, and to develop safety and health activities under the One JTEKT concept.
The company-wide Safety and Health Committee is held twice a year, at the middle and end of the fiscal year, to share policies on safety, health, and fire prevention and to confirm those progresses based on the review of safety scores and employees' opinions, and the results are shared with all employees.
As an organization that complements the activities of the "Company-wide Safety and Health Committee", the "Safety and Health Promotion Meeting" is held every month. In addition to messages from top management on safety and the progress of annual policies, we also share information on accidents and discuss measures to prevent recurrence with all plants, including the executive officer in charge of safety, and focus on bringing the results back to each business site and workplace. At each business site, including plants, a Health and Safety Committee has been established by each business site, chaired by the head of the business site, to implement and confirm various health and safety activities and to proactively address issues through cooperation between labor and management.
Safety and Health Centralized Control System
Main Initiatives in FY2023
[ JTEKT Safety Activities ]
<Enhancement of Safety Training>
We are striving to develop human resources who will prevent accidents from occurring by systematically promoting safety education and training.
As part of our initiatives for FY2022, we are increasing new training, especially for supervisors and managers, who are the key personnel onsite, to enhance our training even further.
<Safety of Machinery and Equipment>
Regarding the safety of machinery and equipment, we are continuing to take measures for equipment with a risk of being "caught in machine" as one of the serious six accidents that could cause severe disabilities that we have been working on.
In addition to that, we are in the process of improving our risk assessment methods to ensure that measures are taken without omission with regard to accidents in general.
※Serious 6 Accidents: Six categories of accidents with high risk of serious accidents as defined by the All Toyota Safety and Health Study Group
Caught in machine, contact with heavy objects, contact with vehicles, falls, electric shock, and contact with high heat objects.
FY2023 Accidents by Work Type
<Personal Protective Equipment>
Regarding protective equipment, appropriate protective equipment is selected at each workplace and workers are instructed to wear protective glasses, safety shoes, helmets, cut-resistant gloves, etc. as necessary based on the guidelines of the company rule.
In addition, a manager responsible for protective equipment use is appointed at each business site, and a structure is in place to support the selection and training of protective equipment.
<Safety Culture Diagnosis>
We are working to improve safety initiatives and create a safety culture at each plant through the "Plant Safety Culture Diagnosis," which mainly consists of an employee awareness survey and evaluation of the actual conditions of each worksite. In FY2023, in particular, we are working to raise the level of safety at each plant by focusing on workplaces with weaknesses and conducting evaluations.
<Ensuring the Safety of Contract Construction on the Premises>
In addition to the safety standards common to the Toyota Group, JTEKT has established its own safety standards, including the establishment and operation of a construction manager system to ensure the safety of contract construction performed on JTEKT's premises, to prevent accidents from occurring.
<Promoting Work based on Ergonomics>
We are promoting work Kaizen by utilizing an ergonomics-based work evaluation system.
In addition, we are working to create a workplace that is easy to work, especially with regard to the weight that can be handheld, taking into account the different muscular strengths of each individual.
<Workplace Environment and Chemical Substances>
In order to create a safe and healthy workplace for all employees, we measure the work environment twice a year in accordance with laws and regulations related to occupational safety and health at workplaces where noise and dust are generated by machining, where heat is generated in heat treatment processes, and where chemical substances are handled to maintain and perform Kaizen.
<Certification Status of Global Management System>
In Japan, two of JTEKT's plants has acquired JISHA Occupational Safety and Health Management System (OSHMS) certification, and the remaining plants have established and are operating their own occupational safety and health management systems based on the concept of the OSHMS. In the JTEKT Group in Japan and overseas, three domestic companies have obtained external certification for JISHA OSHMS, and one domestic company and 30 overseas plants have obtained external certification for ISO 45001.
<Fire Risk Reduction Activities>
If a fire were to occur and affect operations, it would have a significant impact not only on customers but also on the entire supply chain, therefore JTEKT conducts fire prevention inspections to identify fire risks at each plant and promotes countermeasures. Fire risks that are identified are then shared with the entire JTEKT Group and investigated to reduce fire risks.
<Global Initiatives>
In collaboration with the person in charge of safety at each company, we provide support through cross-sectional activities in safety & health and fire prevention by holding periodic meetings, and so on.
Particularly in overseas, we are enhancing our support by collaborating with regional headquarters organizations in Europe, North America, China, and ASEAN countries.
As our main initiative, we are working to prevent accidents by sharing information on accidents that have occurred at JTEKT and its affiliated companies globally, and are conducting activities such as creating management forms and conducting self-inspections with regard to fire prevention.
In the event of an accident or fire, a debriefing meeting is held with JTEKT, and the details of the accident are shared globally.

[Initiatives in FY2024]
<Enhancement of Safety Training>
Based on an analysis of recent trends in occupational accidents, we will expand training for new employees, transferees, and veterans.
In addition, we will expand safety training for managers from the direct divisions, which have been the main focus, to the indirect divisions.
<Safety of Machinery and Equipment>
We will formulate a company-wide deployment plan for the risk assessment focused on the "relationship between hazard sources and operations," which was improved in FY2023, and promote the company-wide deployment of the plan gradually. We will select model workplaces at all plants and proceed with trials.
<Safety Culture Diagnosis>
We will review and improve the operation of the safety culture diagnosis currently in operation. Particular emphasis will be placed on evaluating and improving the operation of the safety and health management system.
<Workplace Environment and Chemical Substances>
To create a workplace structure for voluntary chemical management, we will appoint a chemical administrator and a person responsible for managing the wearing of protective equipment at each business site, and promote the creation of healthy and lively workplaces.
<Fire Risk Reduction Activities>
Based on recent fire trends, we will focus on two elements in particular: ducts, which have the potential for fire spread, and electrical wiring, which increases the risk of fire occurrence. We will strengthen measures against these elements to reduce fire risks.
